I have outlined above the first fix, a primary proposal to create a situation of greater social security, where the numbers within each unit combine upwards to create a more shared responsibility, a greater voice, an increased potential to expand. I will return later to the subject of the tools available to us today to achieve this.
But to demonstrate more effective resistance to unjust authority, we must combine upwards into greater and greater numbers. The lessons of antiquity, and in recurring modern parallels all around us that occur by accident, point the way. We find ourselves on our Social Media networks staring at our 10,000 friends. There is a network here but will they rescue us from unjust incursions by authority? Of course not. That was never part of the deal. Now imagine creating a group consciously that comes into being for just that stated purpose – to protect the security of every member. So let’s take another look at how this happened in the Tribe.
Extended families of course do not exist in isolation. In the end we are all connected. So one extended family recognizes that they have many further links to another extended family, and another, and another. These families in antiquity easily recognized each other as they existed within the same very large territory. They knew clearly of their inter-relationships and recognized their common bonds through the gens, and above that the Phratry, or Fraternity. Phratries with further strong family links between them coalesced into a Tribe.
When we think about coalescing to give us security and strength, it helps to understand how in fact the first Nations were built from these Tribes. Then we may do the same.
Let us look at the formation of ancient Greece and Rome and on the other side of the Atlantic, at the American Indians to see how these Nations, this Society is formed. And in the first of these cases, Greece, where they invented Land as private property when the other did not, let us observe how it was transformed into a State – how they turned the egalitarian Gentilic System into the hated Class System. And thus we may see how, when a Society is transformed into a State, and its Class System, we may then understand how a State may be turned back into a Society.
